the influence of a good teacher can never be erased

Values and Goals

Teaching Philosophy

I believe that to make way for the future. We must understand, recognize and appreciate our past. As a teacher candidate in Canada, part of that includes identifying the land we all reside on and respecting those who occupied it first. My educational journey brought me to Northern British Columbia for the sole purpose of incorporating Indigenous education into my future classroom. The BC standards explicitly highlight that educators must respect and value the history of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis in Canada and the impact of the past on the present and the future. My teaching philosophy will create an inclusive classroom for all learners regardless of their culture, race, socioeconomic status, or gender. I also want my classroom to be a place where each unique learner feels valued, safe, and heard. Students are often more comfortable and susceptible to learning if they feel safe and included. The principle that resonates with me is that learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential, and relational. As a kinesthetic and visual learner, I learn best through experiencing knowledge. This principal helps us reflect on how it is vital to develop healthy relationships with and among students by building trust. To indeed follow your calling of pursuing a career in education, we must recognize that our learners come to us with open minds and hearts. We must do our best to fill them with holistic, honest, and reflective knowledge. Knowledge doesn’t always have to come in the form of an oral story, but it can simply start with recognizing where we are, where we have come from, regardless of ethnicity or culture.
