Our Prince George Expedition Part 1
This past month we had the opportunity to travel 575km from our Terrace campus to the UNBC Prince George Campus. The anticipation of the trip was exhilarating. Before moving to Terrace, I had never experienced much of Northern British Columbia, so I was excited to see all that BC has to offer. The long winding drive was as beautiful as I thought. What made the trip, however, was a combination of finally meeting our fellow Quesnel peers and getting to learn new and exciting things in a new place. I felt like it was my first day in school again, nervously arriving on the large campus, struggling to find the classroom, and getting ready to mingle with new people. The week was as intense as advertised. At certian points I felt that my fingers would burn holes through my keyboard from all the notes I was taking. Regardless it was nice to be all together learning. Admittedly, however, some activities outshined others. We were constructing paper airplanes and shooting them across the atrium, building model catapults, and practicing our teacher’s handwriting on whiteboards. These were the actual experiences I always associated with teaching school. After all, we are all just big kids crammed into a classroom together. Prince George also reminded me why I am on this journey, to become the best teacher I can be. I was happy to have been surrounded by like-minded individuals who also enjoyed drawing on whiteboards and laughing together over our science presentations. This was the first of two Prince George trips. Though I am unsure what to expect for the next one, I know that this first one helped ground me, both physically and mentally, to where I am in the world and how I can make an impact in a small way. This trip made me stop and think about how lucky I am to have these opportunities and that I get to experience them with all the wonderful friends I have made here.
