the influence of a good teacher can never be erased

Inclusive Education

Education is about turning mirrors into windows, allowing all students equal access to information. Many see math and science as barriers. Not only is the material often challenging to follow if you lack a foundational understanding, but it can be seen as an unrealistic avenue to pursue some. Teachers have the opportunity and means to change that perspective. Classes like math and science are built for inquiry-based learning, allowing students to see things from different angles and ask questions. Teachers can then foster their inquiries into discernments and avenues of reflection for growth. Additionally, this opens many avenues for engagement and cross-curricular learning. Engaging students through play-based learning and games allows for better connections to the material. These games don’t have to be elaborate. They can be simple so that all students have an opportunity the enjoy and participate. Think, pair, and shares are also excellent teaching tools to get students to collaborate and step out of their comfort zone with their own opinions. Outdoor learning can also be beneficial in creating these connections to culture, self-identity, and inquiry. Changing the students’ learning space has been proven to peak inquiry. I know that I want to create a classroom space inclusive of all cultures, inquiries, and future pursuits students have. The first step towards that is ensuring that my classroom is a safe space for students to make these connections, ask the questions they are too afraid to ask and try new things.
